Our Farming Journey

We're not sure exactly when it happened—somewhere between our first failed compost pile and the morning we found a hen napping in the dog bed—but farming stopped being something we wanted to do and became something we simply are.

Foxglove & Feathers is a family farm in Southern Maryland, run by our small family, who has grown up understanding that eggs come from chickens, milk comes from goats, and our chicken, Jean-Poulet Sartre comes from a long line of deeply philosophical birds. For years we studied, worked other people's land, and dreamed about doing it right. Now we are.

"Doing it right" means something specific to us. It means our animals roam, root, scratch, and sun themselves the way animals are meant to. It means six acres of oak-shaded pasture, growing our own food and sharing our produce with friends, neighbors, and those in need, and building something that lasts. It means we will never prioritize a certification over an animal's wellbeing—so while we farm with deep respect for the land and our creatures, we aren't certified organic. If one of our animals is sick, they get treated. Full stop. No ideology comes before their care, even if it means we have to take a hit on our "profit" margin.

We believe that self-sufficiency, animal welfare, and sustainability aren't trends—they're the right way to live on the land. Everything here is raised with intention, handled with honesty, and offered to you with pride.

Welcome to the farm. We're glad you found us.

Stewards of the Land

This farm is not just where we work — it's an ecosystem we are responsible for. We think carefully about what we take from the land and what we give back, farming in a way that keeps soil, wildlife, and pasture healthy for the long haul. The century-old oaks our hens shelter under, the garden that feeds our family and our neighbors, the creatures that share this six acres with us — all of it is held in trust. We don't see ourselves as owners so much as caretakers, doing our best to leave this particular piece of Southern Maryland better than we found it.

The Animal Comes First

Free-range isn't a marketing term here — it's just what our animals do. Our hens roam six acres of oak-shaded pasture, our goats graze as goats are meant to, and their comfort shapes every decision we make. We believe that an animal raised well, with space to behave naturally and real care when they need it, is the foundation of everything good that comes off this farm. The wellbeing of our animals will always come before our bottom line.

Building Something That Lasts

We came to farming after years of learning, because we wanted to live differently — growing our own food, sharing our harvest with friends, neighbors, and those in need, and building something meaningful to pass on. Sustainability and self-sufficiency aren't trends we're chasing. They're the reason we're here. We're not trying to grow big. We're trying to do this right, on this particular piece of Southern Maryland ground, for as long as we can.
